Here are different possible means of transportation that you may take, depending on your own reference and budget.
Halong to Sapa by Local sleeping bus
- Time-saving and doesn’t require any transit point.
- This direct bus doesn’t support customers in foregin Language, as the driver can’t speak English.

- Ideally, it would take about 9 hours to get from Sapa to Halong, which is much shorter if you compare it with the normal route that requires a transit in Hanoi.

- The price is $22/ adult/one way and $40/adult/roundtrip.
Halong to Sapa by private car
For a more private and comfortable experience, choosing a private car would be ideal.
For private car, you can be picked up at either your hotel in Sapa town, Lao Chai, Ta Van or Ta Phin Village. The travel time is also quite short (ideally 8 hours) when using the expressway route.
A big advantage of this option is that you can choose the type of car according to your need, either a 4-seat, a 7-seat or a 9-seat. Therefore, it’s perfect for a family trip or a group of friends.
The price for a 4-seat, a 7-seat and a 9-seat is $300, $350 and $400 respectively, which is quite reasonable considering how superior it is compared to the other means of transportation. (The price is per car, not per person)
Halong to Sapa with a transit in Hanoi
If you do not have a rush schedule, aren’t annoyed by 8-9 hours of continuous moving or simply want to enjoy the landscapes as much as possible, you can take a transit at Hanoi as illustrated below:
Option 1: Using bus

Hanoi Halong bay by limousine van
Continuing the trip to Halong, it’s convenient to take our Limousine Van. The bus will pick you up from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter and drop you off at Tuan Chau harbor and Hotel in Halong Bay. It takes only 3 hours to reach the destination.

Option 2: Using train
From Sapa to Hanoi
As there is no direct train rail from Sapa to Hanoi, you would need to take a bus from Sapa to Lao Cai.
There is only one train from Lao Cai to Hanoi at 10 pm so it’s very important to do a good timing.
Usually, it would take about 8-9 hours.
Taking a train is a good option if you aren’t pressed for time and want to have a deeper experience. A standard cabin is for 4 people and equipped with air conditioner. The price is fixed at around $17.
From Hanoi to Halong
From Hanoi, you can take another train to Halong. The train departs from Gia Lam station at 7:05 am and returns from Halong To Gia Lam at 15:00.
The price is $5/adult for Vietnamese and $15 for foreigner but the price will be reduced to $10 if you go in a group.
The travel time again is quite tedious for about 7 hours.
Generally speaking, train is good if you want to enjoy the landscape during the trip. But it’s not recommended as the schedule is always fixed and it can take too long.
Some recommended timing for the joined-transfer service
Halong to Sapa route:
Option 1:
Take the limousine from Halong To Hanoi at 12 PM via express way. Once you arrived at Hanoi, take the Limousine from Hanoi to Sapa at 3:30 PM (arrive at Sapa around 9 PM).
This schedule is suitable for passenger just finish the overnight cruise in Halong bay (all cruise check-out around 11:00 – 12:00) then want to go to Sapa within a day.
Option 2:
If you leave halong at late afternoon (from 4pm to 6pm), you can take the limousine from Halong To Hanoi at 5 pm or 6.30 pm. Once you arrived at Hanoi at 8 pm to 9.30 pm, have dinner before take the Limousine from Hanoi to Sapa at 22:00 PM (arrive at Sapa around 6 AM the next day).
Sapa to Halong route:
Night train or Bus from Sapa to Hanoi (arrive in early morning), having breakfast then take a limousine to Halong at 9 am (2.5 hours of transfer).
This schedule is suitable for passenger who need to check-in for their curise tour at 12 pm (all cruise check-in start around 11:30 – 12:00)
