First steps to the entrance of the cave may give you an impression of small, dark and not much surprising place as the name claims. But just as you pass through a rocky slot and go deeper inside, you will be amazed by how huge it can be. When French colonists first came to the cave, they were so amazed by the majestic beauty and the huge expansion of the cave (about 10,000 m2 in width) that somebody from their expedition exclaimed “Grotto des Surprises”, which means a cave of the surprising things. From then on, the cave has been called Sung Sot Cave (translated into Surprising Cave in English).
Luon Cave
Situated on Bo Hon Island, about 14km to the south of Bai Chay Tourist Wharf and 1 km away from Surprise Cave, Luon Cave is also a very popular destination for tourists. Luon Cave resembles the shape of an arc with 60 meters in length and 2.5 – 4 in height depending on the tide. Due to its limited height, the only way to visit is by using a small boat or a kayak.
Pearl Farm
Located in an isolated water area named Tung Sau, surrounded by undulating limestone islands, the pearl farm is the only one in Halong and has become a popular spot for tourists recently. Visiting the farm, tourists are fascinated as they can witness and be explained the process in which a beautiful and precious pearl is made, from how they implant the pearl into the oyster’s body to how they harvest and make magnificently beautiful jewelries out of these raw pearls.
Light and Dark Cave (hang Sáng tối): Situated in the border between Halong bay and Lan Ha bay, Light and Dark cave is a popular destination for tourists. Often called “The Surprising Cave under water” due to its special geographical structure, Light and Dark Cave is a “hot” spot for sport lovers. Tourists often go through the cave using Kayak, which is a great way to observe all of the beauty that it hides as they are free to move around the cave.
Dragon Park
This is one of the biggest theme park in southeast Asia. There are more than 30 amazing games for you to choose. Therefore, it can be a good choice if you travel in a big group or want something different from islands and mountains you often see in Halong.
Thien Canh Son Cave
Located in Bai Tu Long bay, among 59 caves discovered in the region, Thien Canh Son is special in its own way. Despite being much smaller than Surprising Cave, the cave is magnificent with its collection of stalagmites that resemble a baby elephant, or the lotus flower, or the group of gnomes holding a meeting.
Vung Vieng Fishing Village: Located 24 km away from mainland, lying in the heart of Bai Tu Long bay, Vung Vieng Fishing Village is where nearly 160 fishmen reside. Its beauty is the combination of nature and human. Sitting near a chain of limestone islets, the village resembles a flying castle over an emerald sky. Beside its natural features, Vung Vieng also reflects a rich tradition of fishing and aquaculture which has been continued for thousands of years.
Thay Cave
One of the many caves in Bai Tu Long bay is called Thay cave. The name literally means “Teacher” cave due to lots of book- sized and quill –sized stalactites, and a small stone like a table for reading inside the cave which makes people think of a teacher’s office. As we go deeper into the cave, it’s easy to notice a gradual drop in temperature. Standing on one side of the cave is a small lake filled with water from the watershed of mountain flowing down at night and day. Wide dome with stalactites hang down all strange shapes. Reflected in the natural stalactites along with the streams gurgling, the light from the cave’s door gives tourists a sense of mystery and charm.
What to do in Halong
Swimming and Trekking in Titov Island
The island and the surrounding water is ideal for aquatic sports like swimming as the tide here is low and the water is relative clear. Apart from swimming, mountain trekking is also recommended. The track from the beach to the mountain top is rough but breathtaking. Getting to the top, tourists can grasp an overview of the whole bay, which would be something shouldn’t be missed.
Visiting Surprising Cave
The beauty of Surprising Cave is tempting. That’s why you should at least visit it one time in your life. Going inside Sung Sot Cave, there are many surprising things waiting for tourists to explore such as stalactites having different and special shapes, an old banyan tree having luxuriant foliage, dinosaurs…. Reaching the highest peak of the cave, you also have the chance to admire the beautiful landscapes of clear water lakes, some types of trees and birds living here.
Finding out how pearl was made at Pearl Farm
Exploring the pearl farm is also a highlight of the trip to Halong. Pearl is something valuable and beautiful but also mysterious to many. Therefore, having a 101 lesson of the technique applied to make these shiny pearls can be a great pleasure. You can also buy pearl jewelry made right in the farm if you wish.
Kayaking: in Dau Be island or Dark Light Cave
Kayaking would be a must if you wish to observe the spectacular beauty of Lan Ha. There are many choices for where to go on a kayak trip but Dau Be island and Dark Light cave would be the most ideal candidates as the water in these places is relative peaceful and the views are also breathtaking.
Admire the stunning Limestone karst Thien Son Cave
The formation of karst cave itself is a wonder of nature as it may takes millions of years so that stalagmites could grow up to this size. Therefore, paying a visit and seeing those beautiful crafts of nature could be something you wouldn’t want to miss.
Discover life of fishermen at floating villages
One of the many activities that tourists love to do when arriving in Bai Tu Long is to experience the life of fishermen in floating villages. Although living in floating houses can be not really comfortable with the lack of electricity and fresh water, learning how to catch fish or cultivate lobsters can a really fun and unforgettable experience.
Kayaking at Thay Cave
Kayaking to Thay Cave could also be a wonderful journey. As the water track to the cave is long and full of magnificent sceneries, you can enjoy the irresistible charm of nature. The door of Thay cave is also a masterpiece with many impressive limestone islets standing still like living creatures being petrified.

Some says Pho is the spirit of Hanoi. And it would be undoubtedly wrong to say it false. Even though Pho can be found throughout Vietnam, Hanoi is known as the place where this iconic dish originated. Pho is the perfect combination of rice noodles, meat (either beef or chicken), spices (cinnamon, star anise, ginger…) and vegetables (green onion and other herbs).
